History of Chavara Mission
Chavara Mission, in the civil districts of Jalgaon,Dhulia and Nandurbar within the territory of Kalyan Diocese, was formally inaugurated at a solemn Mass led by Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Chittilappilly, Bishop of Kalyan, on February 2, 1993. The first missionary to work in this region was Rev. Fr. Sebastian Vazhappilly who was followed by Rev. Fr. Francis John. The former invited the CMC Sisters of Ernakulam Province to start an English Medium School which was opened in 1990. Devamatha Province of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) was given the care of this area in 1992. Rev. Fathers Diego Kodankandath and Raphael Kurian were the pioneers of Chavara Mission. They started staying in a rented house at Jalgaon. On October 1, 1992 present regional house was erected at Dhule. In July 1994, we started Chavara English Medium School at Walwadi village, Dhule. A Rural Health Centre was constructed with a view to extending our service to the Adivasis.
